La parábola de la semilla

Jesús dijo además: "Escuchen esta comparación del Reino de Dios. Un hombre esparce la semilla en la tierra, y ya duerma o esté despierto, sea de noche o de día, la semilla brota y crece, sin que él sepa cómo. La tierra da fruto por sí misma: primero la hierba, luego la espiga, y por último la espiga se llena de granos. Y cuando el grano está maduro, se le mete la hoz, pues ha llegado el tiempo de la cosecha." -- Marcos 4:26-29

Tenemos gozo en nuestro corazón al poder compartir con otra congregación en Fullerton los dones de uno de nuestros líderes. Hace dos años y tres meses que comenzamos este ministerio aquí en la Iglesia Metodista Unida Orangethorpe sin imaginarnos que algún día saldrían algunas personas desde las semillas que aquí fueron plantadas. Ahora el fruto sale de nuevo a plantar semillas en la Iglesia Luterana St Luke's en la calle Valencia. Nuestro hermano Tomás López estará sirviendo como desarrollador de comunidad junto con los miembros de esa iglesia. Dios te bendiga Tomás.

Otra persona a quien ahora estamos recibiendo en otras capacidades junto con nosotros es nuestra querida hermana Elvia Jaurequi. Ella estará continuando sus estudios en el seminario de Claremont y parte de los requisitos es que sirva dos semestres como interna en una iglesia. Nuestra iglesia se siente honrada de haber sido escogida para que Elvia cumpla con los requisitos de su internado a nuestro lado. La estaremos apoyando con nuestras oraciones y nuestra presencia en las diferentes actividades. Que Dios continúe caminando al lado de Elvia.

Nuestros deseos se han hecho realidad en organizar actividades para los niños, hijos de los residentes. Estos padres, por horario de trabajo no llegan a sus casas sino hasta las 6pm. La mayoría de los niños llegan después de asistir al Centro de Aprendizaje, a hogares vacíos. Y lo único que hacen es ver TV o salir a correr las calles. Muchos padres nos habían conversado sobre esto y cuánto les preocupaba esta falta de supervisión a los niños. Tenemos varios padres que nos están ayudando porque sus horarios de trabajo se los permite. El horario es de 4:30 pm a 6:00 pm. Y las actividades que se dan son:

Lunes	Música: Canto y clases de guitarra
Martes	Arte: Pintura, dibujo, etc.
Miércoles	Baile folklórico
Jueves	Español
Viernes	Baile del hip-hop

The parable of the seed

Jesus also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come." -- Mark 4:26-29

It gives me great joy to be able to share the gifts of one of our leaders with another congregation in Fullerton. It has been two years and three months since we began this ministry here at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church, not imagining that some day some people would "sprout" from the seeds that were planted here. Now the product of those seeds goes out to plant seeds at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Valencia street. Our brother Tomás López will be serving as community developer with the members of that church. May God bless Tomás!

Another person to who is now with us in other capacities is our dear sister Elvia Jaurequi. She will be continuing her studies at the seminary in Claremont and part of the requirements is that she serve two semesters as an intern in a church. Our church feels honored to be chosen as the place where Elvia fulfills her internship requirements. We will be supporting her with our prayers and our presence in different activities. May God continue to accompany Elvia.

Our wishes have become reality in organizing activities for the children of the residents of our community. These parents, due to their work schedules, don't come home until 6pm. Most of their children return to empty homes after attending Learning Center. About all they can do is watch TV or go out to roam the streets. A lot of parents had talked to us about how much this lack of supervision for their children worried them. We have several parents who are helping us because their work schedules allow them to do so. The schedule is from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. And the activities that will take place are:

Tuesday	Art: Painting, drawing, etc.
Wednesday	Folk dance
Thursday	Spanish
Friday	Hip-hop dance

Quién es quien en el Ministerio Latino: Tomás López

Tomás es uno de los animadores de la música en el Ministerio Latino de la Iglesia Metodista Unida Orangethorpe. Nació en Santiago Texacuangos, un pueblo pequeño al sur de la capital de El Salvador (San Salvador). Miembro de una familia de 4 hermanas y 8 hermanos. En su pueblo natal, empezó a interesarse por la música. Alfredo, un buen amigo de él, le enseñó como colocar los dedos en la guitarra para cantar en Re Mayor, y así empezó Tomás a animar la vida de otros con la música. Lamentablemente, Alfredo fue víctima de la guerra como muchos miles de salvadoreños y un dia fue asesinado, quedando su guitarra en manos de Tomás quien continuó y continúa aprendiendo.

Tomás vino a los Estados Unidos el 7 de Mayo de 1981. Su país, estaba sufriendo los comienzos de una guerra que duraría 12 años. Debido a la persecusión hacia muchos líderes de la Iglesia en su país, donde él estudiaba en el Seminario, Tomás vivió como refugiado por unos meses, recibiendo el apoyo de quienes ahora dirigen nuestro ministerio local: los hermanos Santillana. A través de esa convivencia con hermanos Metodistas Unidos, Tomás conoció la vida de la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos. Así, en 1988, después de pasar el proceso de candidatura, le fue asignado el cargo de Pastor Local para dirigir el Proyecto "Adelante", un ministerio para centroamericanos en el area de Pico-Union, el cual fue abierto por iniciativa de los hermanos Fernando y Teresa Santillana en 1984. Tomás dirigió ese Ministerio por 14 años. Actualmente, continúa estudios para completar su formación académica y servir mejor a la Iglesia.

Solamente una de sus hermanas vive en Los Angeles desde 1989. Y Tomás no pudo viajar a su país por 10 años hasta que la situación de violencia disminuyó en 1991. Actualmente, vive en Pacoima, en el area del Valle de San Fernando con su familia: Amanda, quien es originaria de Honduras y que emigró a Los Ángeles en 1992, y Abril Saraí, que nació en Los Ángeles. Amanda trabaja en la Iglesia Metodista Unida "El Mesias" como Community Developer. Coordina el desarrollo de programas de Servicios Sociales para la comunidad de Pacoima. Ha sido miembro de la Iglesia desde 1994 cuando empezó a participar en el Ministerio de Pico-Union donde se conocieron con Tomás en 1992. Ambos son muy activos en favor de los derechos de la comunidad inmigrante a través de los ministerios de la Iglesia Metodista Unida. Actualmente, Tomás tambien desarrolla, desde Septiembre pasado, un trabajo de medio tiempo con la Iglesia Luterana "San Lucas" en Fullerton, donde le han pedido que ayude a organizar a la comunidad latina.

Noticias de nuestra comunidad

Desde septiembre de este año, se ha llevado a cabo un reparto de abarrotes en el estacionamento de nuestra iglesia, organizada y coordinada por los miembros de nuestra congregación latina, en cooperación con la organización Second Harvest. La distribución se realiza a las 10:30 am del primer sábado de cada mes. En octubre, unas cien familias de nuestro barrio recibieron despensas.

El próximo reparto de abarrotes será sábado, el 1o. de noviembre, el mismo día en que se celebra el Día de los Muertos, un evento tradicional en países latinoamericanos. En nuestra iglesia, observaremos esta fiesta inmediatamente después del reparto de comida, o sea alrededor del mediodía. Habrá una liturgia para conmemorar y celebrar las vidas de nuestros seres queridos, especialmente los que han fallecido durante los pasados doce meses. Invitamos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a que traigan fotos u otros recuerdos de las personas cuyas vidas desean conmemorar.

I thank God for each one of you who you make all our programs and activities possible. In the midst of all of them the presence of all of us as ambassadors of the Good News of Jesus Christ is what sustains us, animates us, and keeps us together.

Who's Who in the Latino Ministry: Tomás López

Tomás is one of the musicians who enlivens the Latino Ministry at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church. He was born in Santiago Texacuangos, a small town located south of the capital of El Salvador (San Salvador), a member of a family of 4 sisters and 8 brothers. He first took an interest in music in his home town when Alfredo, a good friend, taught him how to place his fingers on the guitar to sing in D Major, and that's how Tomás began to brighten the lives of others with his music. Sadly, Alfredo was a victim of the war as were many thousands of Salvadorans and one day was murdered, leaving his guitar in Tomás' hands. Tomás continues learning to play it.

Tomás came to the United States May 7, 1981. His country was at the beginning of a war that would last 12 years. Due to the persecution of many leaders of the Church in his country, where he studied in the Seminary, Tomás lived as a refugee for months, supported by those who now direct our local ministry: the Santillanas. Through that fellowship with United Methodist brothers and sisters, Tomás became acquainted with the life the Church in the United States. Thus, in 1988, after going through the candidacy process, he was assigned as Local Pastor to direct the "Adelante" Project, a ministry for Central Americans in the Pico-Union area, which started through the initiative of Fernando and Teresa Santillana in 1984. Tomás directed that Ministry for 14 years. At the moment, he continues his studies to complete his academic foundation and to serve his Church better.

One of his sisters has lived in Los Angeles since 1989. Tomás couldn't travel to his country for 10 years until the violence diminished in 1991. At the moment, he lives in Pacoima, in the San Fernando Valley with his family: Amanda, who is from Honduras and who immigrated to Los Angeles in 1992, and Abril Saraí, who was born in Los Angeles. Amanda works at El Mesías United Methodist Church as Community Developer. She coordinates the development of Social Service programs for the community of Pacoima. She has been a member of the Church since 1994 when she began participating in the Pico-Union Ministry, where she met Tomás in 1992. Both are very active in the community, working for the rights of immigrants through the ministries of the United Methodist Church. Tomás has also been working part-time with St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Fullerton, since last September. They have asked him to help organize a Latino ministry there.

Community News

Since September of this year, a distribution of groceries in our church's parking lot has taken place, organized and coordinated by the members of our Latin congregation, in cooperation with the Second Harvest organization. The distribution happens at 10:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month. In October, one hundred families of our neighborhood received shopping bags of food.

The next grocery distribution will be Saturday, November 1st, the same day in which the Day of the Dead is celebrated, a traditional event in Latin American countries. In our church, we will observe this festival immediately after the food distribution, or around noon. There will be a worship service to commemorate and celebrate the lives of our loved ones, specially those who have passed away during the past twelve months. We invite all our brothers and sisters to bring photos or other mementos of the people whose lives they wish to commemorate.

The purpose of La Red is to keep members of our congregations up-to-date on our growing Latino Ministry. Its title means The Net in Spanish and reminds us of Jesus' appeal to his first disciples to become "fishers of men".
